Are Security Lights Necessary?

The weather hasn’t been playing ball, but the longer nights are irrefutable proof that we’re heading slowly into autumn. And for many people, that will raise the annual question of whether they should invest in security lights. With budgets tights, outdoor lighting can feel like an unnecessary expense. So, what’s the case for buying security lights? What are their benefits? And do you really need them?

Does Your Home Need Security Lights?

What are the benefits of installing security lights?

When you invest in security lights, like the Saxby Lighting Surge, you gain a couple of benefits.

Security

OK, it’s in the name! But by installing security lights around your property, you are adding another layer of security. Thieves don’t want to be caught. And the right lighting means that their every motion will be clearly visible to anyone who happens to be looking in the right direction. So, while security lights may not be much of a deterrent for isolated detached properties, in built-up areas, they really can be. And they are much more effective when they are motion triggered – like the Saxby PIR Security Detector – because in most cases, a home’s occupants will be instantly alert to any lighting changes.

Ease

If you don’t have other outdoor lights, security lighting, like the Blaze Motion Sensor, can be a good way to help you navigate the outside of your property in the dark. Energy saving, it only comes to life when it senses movement. But when it does, it can help you reach your door without trips, slips, falls, or even squashed snails! It also makes finding your keys an awful lot easier.

Aesthetic

If you choose well, security lights can also look nice, adding character to your home.

What should you think about before installing security lights?

Where will you put them?

Security lights are only beneficial if they are placed correctly. While you might think that your doors are the best place for security lights, like the Halo, you may find that windows opening on to sideways are more likely to be targeted. Or that your shed needs protection too.

What power source will you use?

Security lights come in a range of forms. Including hardwired, plug-in, and solar. So, which will work for you? Depending on the orientation of your property, solar security lights might not be fully reliable. Plug-in lights can easily be unplugged. But hardwired lights may require an electrician for installation. So, which will best suit your needs?

What type of light do you need?

Floodlights, like the Megaman Voss, provide absolute illumination. Which can be incredibly useful if you have a large garden. But if you have near neighbours, they can cause contention, particularly if you have a lot of nights out, leave for work in the early hours, or have a lot of local wildlife. Smaller lights, like the Lutec Rado, are a lot more neighbour-friendly, but you’ll need more of them to cover your entire property.

Are security lights necessary?

There’s no arguing against the fact that you can live without security lights. However, they can be a really useful addition to any home. Bringing convenience and peace-of-mind, as well as decoration. Whether you need them or not, only you can decide. But we’ve never had a customer who regretted a security light purchase.
