Bring a Touch of Nature into Your Home with Biophilic Design

2023 has been a year of big and bold décor trends. From Barbiecore to dopamine dressing. But there has also been another movement quietly making itself known – biophilic design. With a strong focus on bringing the natural world into the home, biophilic design is all about serenity and the use of natural materials and colours to create a calming, relaxing environment.

From wood and stone table lamps to gently bubbling indoor water features, there are a variety of ways to comfortably invite natural elements into your home.

Easy Ways to Incorporate Biophilic Design into Your Home

Use natural colours and materials

Whether you opt for wooden furniture, tiled flooring, or terracotta paint, the more natural the aesthetic, the more calming the effect. So, look for the colours and textiles you find most commonly in nature – soft greens, earthy tones, stone, wood, and natural fabrics.

Incorporate plants

There’s nothing much more natural than plants. And there are endless ways to use them in your home. Green walls comprised of multiple small plants are becoming increasing popular, creating a form of living artwork. Terrariums are both breath-takingly beautiful and low maintenance. Air plants need only a place to rest and a weekly spritz of water. And of course, you can have pot plants from floor to ceiling – wherever it works best in your home.

Consider your lighting

While biophilic design embraces natural lighting, it’s not always possible to do so in British homes. Windows are frequently small and poorly positioned. Meaning that we rely on synthetic lights. And that’s where wood and stone table lights can come into their own. With a table lamp like the Nordlux Groa, you have the calming simplicity of exposed wood shaped into a delicately intricate and eye-catching form. For a more polished look, you can select the marble base of the Nordlux Lily or a dark wood and copper combination. If you prefer something more textured, the Endon Terrazzo stone lamp might appeal. Or, if you are looking for something with more of a traditional feel, the Nordlux Christina  completes a smooth wooden base with a curved glass dome, creating an aesthetic that is quite its own.

Use water

Water can have a range of benefits in the home. Whether you opt for a small aquarium, indoor pond, or plant-filled shrimp tank for a soothing visual effect. Or choose a tinkling indoor fountain for the auditory calm. Water can be a great way to bring a new element in to your home’s design. Peaceful, beautiful, and appealing, it can really help to enhance that biophilic tranquillity.

Embrace the shapes of nature

When nature is left to its own devices, it’s only in winter that you see sharp angles. And even then, you rarely find straight lines. Nature is soft and curving. So, use those shapes to create a calming aesthetic within your home.

Biophilic design can be embraced as a whole or taken piecemeal. But by incorporating elements – whether in a single room or throughout your home – you can begin to find snatches of serenity that will make your home the calming, restorative environment you need it to be.
